Introduction to Decimals and Fractions Samples

Decimal is the type of numeral system which has its base as ten . The decimal system is also known as Base-ten System because these are the numbers with base 10 . This type of numerals is playing a vital role in the modern civilization .

To understand the decimals exactly what it is we have to know the Place value . i,e to know that to which place does the number belong to as shown below

Consider , 456

in which , 4 represent the hundreds place

5 represent the tens place

6 represent the unit place

As we move towards the place value increases by 10 and if we move towards right the place value decreases by 10 .

Now consider , 456.789

where the point refers to the Decimal point , which differentiates the place values which is less than 10 i,e the 1/10th place , 1/100th place etc,

7 represents the 1/10th place of the number 456.789

8 represents the 1/100th place of the number 456.789

9 represents the 1/1000th place of the number 456.789

The number with decimal point in it is known as decimal number .
